did they rename it? it used to be Maidan Nezalezhnosti- Independence square... it has changed so much- when i was there in 1999, there were no fountains nor columns, nor neon lighting- just a hot dusty empty brick lined soviet square. My theory about the Maidan is that they tried to cram everything that every other European square has in; the pyramid from the Louvre, Nelson's column, a triumphal arch, fountains, the compass rose. it comes off feeling a bit crowded now
